WELCOME FROM THE DIRECTOR

Dear Patrons,

Welcome to Golden State Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker! It is an absolute joy to share this cherished holiday tradition with you. The Nutcracker is more than just a ballet — it’s a celebration of community, wonder, and the transformative power of art. For many, this timeless classic is a gateway to the enchanting world of ballet, and we are honored to have it be a part of your holiday season.

For me, The Nutcracker was my first introduction to ballet, and bringing my vision of this masterpiece to life has been a deeply fulfilling journey. This production is the result of extraordinary collaboration, and I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our company dancers, GSBA students, and artistic staff, whose artistry and dedication have made this performance possible. I am especially thankful to Ahmad Joudeh and Teresa Chao, who provided invaluable cultural guidance for the Arabian Coffee and Chinese Tea dances in Act II, ensuring these moments are as authentic and respectful as they are beautiful.

None of this would be possible without our incredible community. To our devoted Board of Directors, generous donors, and loyal audiences — your support keeps the magic of ballet alive and thriving. It is my hope that every time the curtain rises, you feel the pride and inspiration that your belief in us makes possible.

This holiday season, may your hearts be filled with hope, joy, health, and love. Thank you for being a part of the Golden State Ballet family.

Happy Holidays,

Raúl Salamanca
Founder and Executive Artistic Director

 SYNOPSIS
The Story of The Nutcracker

ACT I

It is Christmas Eve in 1892, and the Stahlbaum family is hosting their annual holiday party. Clara and Fritz, the young Stahlbaum children, eagerly anticipate the arrival of their guests, filling the house with joy and excitement.

As the party begins, the children are thrilled to receive gifts, while their parents lead a festive dance. The last guest to arrive is Clara’s mysterious and beloved godfather, Herr Drosselmeyer, a skilled magician and toymaker. He captivates everyone with a mesmerizing magic show and presents three mechanical dolls that delight the children. His final surprise is a Nutcracker doll, which only Clara truly admires. Enchanted, she begs him to make it life-sized, but her brother Fritz grows jealous and breaks the Nutcracker. Drosselmeyer quickly repairs it, and the evening continues with dancing and merriment.

As the party winds down, Clara and Fritz are sent to bed, but Clara sneaks back downstairs to check on her Nutcracker. At the stroke of midnight, the room transforms: the Christmas tree grows to towering heights, and an army of giant mice, led by the fearsome Mouse King, invades. The Nutcracker comes to life, leading an army of toy soldiers into battle. Clara bravely saves the Nutcracker, helping him defeat the Mouse King.

To Clara’s astonishment, the Nutcracker transforms into a handsome prince. Together, they journey through the sparkling Land of Snow, where the Snow King and Queen welcome them as snowflakes whirl and dance around them in a flurry of winter magic. Guided by Drosselmeyer’s magic, they continue to the enchanting Kingdom of Sweets.

ACT II

Clara and the Nutcracker Prince arrive in the dazzling Kingdom of Sweets, ruled by the gracious Sugar Plum Fairy. Hearing of Clara’s bravery, the Fairy invites them to a grand celebration in her honor.

Dances from around the world bring the kingdom to life: Spanish chocolate, Arabian coffee, Chinese tea, and Russian candy canes dazzle with their vibrant performances. Marzipan shepherdesses enchant with their delicate flute dance, and Mother Ginger’s playful Polichinelles tumble out from beneath her enormous skirt. A waltz of flowers, led by the radiant Dew Drop Fairy, fills the air with elegance.

The evening reaches its peak as the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Prince perform a breathtaking Grand Pas de Deux. But as the dreamlike celebration comes to an end, Clara awakens in her own home, clutching her beloved Nutcracker and wondering if it was all a dream—or something more magical.
