NEVER HERE | March 26-28, 2027
Center Theatre at California Center for the Arts, Escondido

Golden State Ballet presents Never Here, an electrifying mixed repertory program that blurs eras, styles, and sensibilities in a single unforgettable evening. From neoclassical iconography to contemporary coastal romance to a bold new world premiere, this triple bill traces the evolution of ballet through three distinct choreographic voices.

The evening opens with Rubies by George Balanchine—a sparkling, jazz-inflected jewel from Jewels that pulses with precision, speed, and Stravinsky’s driving score. Sharp, brilliant, and unmistakably modern in spirit, Rubies is Balanchine at his most playful and daring.

Next, the program shifts to the sunlit world of Paz de la Jolla by Justin Peck—the celebrated ballet featured in the documentary film Ballet 422. Set to the lush, propulsive music of Philip Glass, Peck’s work captures youthful energy, fleeting connection, and the dreamlike rhythm of the California coast.

The evening culminates in Never Here, a world premiere by choreographers Cory Barnette and Troy Herring—a bold new creation developed for Golden State Ballet. Expansive, contemporary, and emotionally charged, this new work pushes the company into fresh physical and theatrical territory, closing the program with an urgent look forward.

Three works. Three worlds. One unforgettable evening.

You make the mistakes look really good, I think we’re going to keep that.”
— JUSTIN PECK while creating PAZ DE LA JOLLA
