Every performance begins long before the curtain rises.

Behind every pirouette, every lift, and every standing ovation are artists who dedicate countless hours to training, rehearsing, and continually refining their craft. They are teachers, mentors, athletes, friends, and members of our community whose passion extends far beyond the stage.

This season, we're inviting you to get to know a few of the artists who make Golden State Ballet possible. Through this series, you'll meet dancers from our Corps de Ballet and learn about their journeys, what inspires them, how they spend the off-season, and what they're most excited to share with audiences this year.

Whether you're a longtime subscriber or planning your very first visit to the theater, we hope these stories help you connect with the people behind the performances.

Samantha Schmidt

Corps de Ballet

When Samantha Schmidt returned to Southern California after several years dancing professionally out of state, she wasn't simply looking for a new contract—she was looking for a company that would continue to challenge and inspire her as an artist.

Golden State Ballet quickly stood out.

"I was really impressed by the company's repertoire and the talent of the dancers," Samantha says. "After dancing out of state for several years, I was ready to be closer to my family... GSB truly felt like the perfect fit both professionally and personally."

Originally from Yucaipa, California, Samantha began dancing when she was six years old. Growing up with two parents who were both professional dancers, she saw firsthand the dedication and artistry required to build a career in ballet.

"They showed me that this was possible for me if I worked hard."

That pursuit of excellence continues to motivate her today.

One of the things she's looking forward to most this season is performing Justin Peck's Paz de la Jolla.

"The repertoire keeps me inspired and eager to evolve as an artist."

For Samantha, challenging choreography isn't just exciting—it's an opportunity to continue growing with every rehearsal and every performance.

Postcard from Summer

This summer has been a balance of dancing, cross-training, and spending time with friends and family.

Alongside working as a waitress, Samantha has been teaching young ballet students while also performing as a guest artist with SoCal Ballet Scene and Ballet Collective San Diego.

As the new season approaches, she's looking forward to returning to the studio, reconnecting with her fellow dancers, and diving into a new year of performances.

Beyond the Stage

The audience sees Samantha's confidence and artistry under the stage lights. Offstage, she's just as inspiring.

A self-described introvert, Samantha enjoys the quieter moments between rehearsals. She's an avid reader—especially romance fantasy novels—and often spends her downtime with a good book, at a yoga or Pilates class, or relaxing by the beach to recharge.

She's also one of the hardest-working members of our company. When she's not rehearsing with Golden State Ballet, Samantha balances teaching young dancers, guest performing with other organizations, and working outside the studio—all while continuing to train and prepare for each season.

Perhaps what stands out most, though, is her thoughtfulness. Whether she's celebrating a colleague's birthday, congratulating a fellow dancer on a debut, or honoring someone's retirement, Samantha is often the one creating beautiful handmade cards to mark the occasion. It's a small gesture that reflects the care and encouragement she brings to the studio every day.

Those who share the stage with her know that while her artistry is exceptional, it's her kindness that leaves an equally lasting impression.
